Ice Fishing 101 - Learn the Basics!

This winter has been cold and nothing beats the quality of fish through the ice!

Join Kinfolk Hunting Collective for a welcoming, hands-on introduction to ice fishing. It is about learning the fundamentals, staying safe, and getting outside when most want to hibernate.

Whether you are brand new or a seasoned hard water angler, this day is built to have a great time on the ice and build community.

Some highlights

  • Ice safety: reading ice, thickness guidelines

  • Gear basics: what you actually need vs what can wait (auger, rods, tip-ups, bait, electronics, shelter, clothing)

  • How to choose a spot: structure, depth, weeds, drop-offs, and why fish travel where they do in winter

  • Drilling and setting up: hole placement, managing slush, simple spreads, and staying organized

  • Two core methods: jigging and tip-ups 

  • Landing and handling fish

  • Regulations and ethics

  • Who it is for: Everyone, No experience needed

  • Cost:Free

  • What to bring: Warm outdoor clothing, waterproof boots, and snacks. There will be some ice fishing gear available to borrow but if you have some please bring it,  You will need a valid NY fishing license, you can get a one day license.
