Deer Scouting 101

Learn how to scout for deer! This is a two-part event where you will learn how to scout a new property for the purposes of deer hunting.

This event will be broken into two sessions:

  • An online Zoom session where we will cover “e-scouting” using OnX

  • An in-person woods walk to look for deer sign

In our woods walk, we will specifically be discussing and looking for:

  • Various types of deer sign including tracks, trails, scat, rubs and scrapes

  • How to identify where deer are feeding

  • Deer bedding

  • Terrain features a deer hunter should be looking for

  • How to choose a location to set up a stand or blind

  • How to think about access to your stand/blind the day of the hunt

  • How to use OnX in the field while scouting

  • When you should scout

The event will take place on private land in Westchester County on Sat, August 16 starting at 10AM.  We will not be providing transportation but will help with coordinating carpools.  Lunch will be provided.  The Zoom event will happen one evening the week prior to the woods walk.

This event is limited to 30 mentees and is open to all to apply. Preference will be given to BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, and women applicants.

Applications are due by end of day August 3rd.
